mg\/kg)<\/strong>&nbsp;was given orally 5 days\/week for 3 consecutive weeks with a break of 2 days of no injection between weeks. This&nbsp;<strong>was unexpectedly toxic, resulting in six deaths in the first week of temozolomide treatment, and the mice that died were excluded from analyses<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026In conclusion, we propose the&nbsp;<strong>immune-stimulatory activity of niacin, a common vitamin that could be rapidly translated into clinical use, as an adjunctive treatment for patients with GBM<\/strong>. The subverted myeloid immunity in other cancers could also be conducive for niacin intervention, but this remains to be determined in future studies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.inverse.com\/mind-body\/study-common-vitamin-potential-glioblastoma-treatment\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026<strong>Glioblastoma is the most commonly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17032-glioblastoma-tumors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diagnosed<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 and most lethal \u2013 kind of malignant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/34413-brain-cancer-john-mccain-glioblastoma\">brain tumor<\/a>. Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can help slow their growth, but the tumor almost always returns<\/strong>. Roughly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/20\/opinion\/john-mccain-brain-cancer-glioblastoma.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">18,000 people<\/a>&nbsp;in the United States receive a diagnosis of glioblastoma every year; the median survival prognosis is less than fifteen months.&nbsp;<strong>Efforts so far to come up with a more effective treatment have been, by and large, unsuccessful<\/strong>. But a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stm.sciencemag.org\/lookup\/doi\/10.1126\/scitranslmed.aay9924\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new study<\/a>&nbsp;in mice offers hope for a diagnosis that, at present, is often a death sentence. In the study,&nbsp;<strong>a common vitamin called&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Niacin-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">niacin<\/a><\/strong><strong>, also known as<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;vitamin B3<\/strong><strong>, was seen to reprogram immune cells in the brain, in turn boosting the cell\u2019s ability to fight off the tumor<\/strong>. The research was published Wednesday in the journal&nbsp;<em>Science Translational Medicine<\/em>. The finding that niacin had the ability to rejuvenate the immune system so as to suppress brain cancer was \u201cREMARKABLE\u201d, says study author&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vweeyong.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">V. Wee Yong<\/a>, a professor at the University of Calgary\u2019s Cumming School of Medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026Using mouse models that had been implanted with BTICs derived from human patients to form glioblastomas, they tested how effective niacin worked\u00a0<em>in vivo<\/em>.\u00a0<strong>When they treated the mice with the vitamin compound, they found that\u00a0the growth of the brain tumor was brought under control, and the lifespan of the mice greatly extended<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-wordpress wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed
