Quantitative analysis of hair / (toe)nail samples for the presence and concentrations of several steroid analytes (pregnanes, androstanes, estranes, thyroid hormones, etc).
**DO NOT WASH THE NAIL/HAIR SAMPLES BEFORE SENDING**
NAIL ANALYSIS: For optimal results, please send ONLY nail samples from EACH BIG TOE. The sample(s) should be free of ANY nail polish, decorations/extensions, and/or other cosmetic/medical procedures. Ideally, the nails should not have had any nail polish or other cosmetic/medical procedures done on them for at least a week before harvesting them for analysis. The nail sample from each of the big toes must be at least 3mm (0.1in) long. Taking into account the speed of nail growth, such a nail sample should provide information on average analyte concentrations/exposure across the entire organism that occurred about 3 months ago. This is due to the fact that toenails grow at a rate of about 1mm per week and it takes about 3 months for the portion of the nail sent for analysis to grow from the nail bed to the tip of the toe, where it can be cut off and shipped for analysis. Once each of the big toe nails are cut, simply place them in a ziplock bag, seal it and mail to us. If you don’t have a ziplock bag, simply place the samples on a sheet of clean paper (e.g. an A4 sheet) and then fold over several times to form a rectangular shape with the samples inside, place in an envelope and mail it to us.
HAIR ANALYSIS: The amount of hair needed for proper analysis is in the range of 300mg-500mg per sample. The closer to the scalp the hair sample was taken from, the more recent timespan the analyte concentration results cover. For example, cutting a piece of hair from the base (i.e. touching the scalp) and then sending a 1.5cm (0.5in) long, 0.5cm (0.15in) wide piece starting from the base, should provide sufficient material to determine analyte concentration/exposure over the last month. For each additional 1.5cm (0.5in) of hair length away from the base/scalp, the timespan is extended by about 30 days (a month). For example, if a person sends a hair sample weighing at least 300mg, that is 1in long, 0.5in wide and has been cut from the base/scalp, this should provide information on AVERAGE analyte concentrations over the last 60 days (2 months). The steroid analysis service can be ordered either by group(s) of steroids (e.g. one or more of the groups of androgens, estrogens, mineralo/gluco-corticoids, thyroid, etc) and/or a-la-carte (e.g. one or more of individual steroids such as pregnenolone, progesterone, DHEA, cortisol, estradiol, testosterone, etc),
For example, a male may typically order the steroid panels for androgens and estrogens. A female may typically order the steroid panels for precursors (contains progesterone) and estrogens. However a male may also be interested in his progesterone levels, while a female may also be interested in her androgen levels (especially adrenal androgens like DHEA/S). Since progesterone is included in neither the androgen nor estrogen panels, the male may order the androgens and estrogens as panels and then add progesterone as an additional single test a-la-carte. Conversely, since DHEA/S is included neither in the estrogens nor in the precursors panels, the female would order the precursors and estrogens panels and add the single DHEA/S test a-la-carte. Finally, a person of either sex may simply be interested in unisex biomarkers of stress such as cortisol/DHEA ratio, cortisone/cortisol ratio and even androsterone/etiocholanolone ratio so instead of ordering the full panels (mineralo/gluco-corticoids and androgens) containing each one of those steroids, the person would simply order cortisone, cortisol, DHEA, androsterone, and etiocholanolone a-la-carte. The same reasoning applies to the thyroid hormones as well – i.e. they can be ordered as a panel or individually (e.g. T3, T4, reverse T3, etc).
